うかぶせ【浮かぶ瀬】

a chance (in life); a chance to be saved; a lucky break.

●一生浮かぶ瀬がない. He'll never have a chance to succeed. | He is ruined for life.

・こう災難続きではあの家族も浮かぶ瀬がない. With one disaster coming after another like this, that family has no hope of recovery [is doomed].

・教師が一方的にしかるだけでは, 生徒は浮かぶ瀬がない. If all the teacher does is scold without giving the pupil a chance to explain, the pupil is in a hopeless situation.

●八方ふさがりで, 彼女には浮かぶ瀬もない. Up against the wall [Thwarted from all sides] as she is, nothing can save her.
